Chinese Exchange Programs in Oklahoma

In June 2002, OKITEA was funded by the Freeman Foundation to help establish School to School Exchanges. Twenty Oklahoma schools representing seven public school districts and six private schools have developed exchange programs with schools in Beijing, Chongqing, Shenyang, and Sichuan Province. Students and teachers on both sides of the Pacific travel yearly to their sister school, attend classes, and experience home stays. The students who traveled the first few years are now in college; they report majors in Chinese, international studies, and international law and business. They typically spend their Junior year abroad in China and take special trips to China to visit their former host families. Some of the Chinese exchange students have come to Oklahoma for their university study. OK schools send approximately 200 secondary students and forty teachers to China each year and host the same number from sister schools. Over 2,000 students have seen the world from another point of view – and learned to call the "others" by name.
