Chinese Language in Oklahoma

"There are 1.3 billion reasons to study Chinese."
-Susie Tattershall, Chinese language teacher, Booker T. Washington High School

Oklahoma offers Chinese in 44 schools serving over 7,300 students. In a state of only 3,000,000 people, with 650,000 K-12 students, we place higher than the national average! Seventeen certified resident Chinese teachers and twenty-three visiting teachers currently staff positions in Oklahoma schools. One rural high school class receives Chinese from OU-Tulsa via interactive television (ITV) and three after school K-1st grade programs feature Chinese language by ITV from OU.

State certification for Chinese language teachers: The Oklahoma State Department of Education offers certification to Oklahoma teachers; One of seven states to do so. Through locating and coaching candidates, we hope to certify enough resident teachers to meet much of the demand for Chinese teachers around the state.

If you would like more information on beginning a Chinese language program, or becoming certified to teach Chinese, please contact Jessica Stowell at 918-660-3498 or jstowell@ou.edu.
