Sessions will center on a set of educational videos which focus on the culture and history of China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam supplemented by the expertise of teaching professors and guest speakers. Each seminar will provide teachers with 30 contact hours of Asian content. The seminar covers a set schedule of topics, which is adapted by the institute directors. Primary sources are used, focusing on classroom materials. Topics for the seminars will closely follow the national standards of world history and the AP standards.
Each teacher participant must be teaching a course such as world history, world geography, world cultures, literature or art where adequate time can be allotted to Asian civilizations. Each teacher must have the written support of their school administration and a commitment to retain the course in question in the school curriculum. Teachers will submit lesson plans using primary source readings from the Asian traditions that have been introduced in the seminar. Pre-service teachers are also eligible for the seminar! OCTA provides a stipend of $500: $250 payable upon satisfactory completion of the seminar; $250 at the end of the first year of teaching with their completed and approved lesson plans. Participants will also receive $200 worth of textbooks, a one-year subscription to Education About Asia, and $300 (per teacher) as library mini-grants for the library of each participating school.
