Julia Courcier
Graduated: Spring 2001

I recently completed my Masters in Telecomputing (July 2001), but was one of the first students of the program in Tulsa. I began in Fall 1995 with Client-Server computing, before there was even a full curriculum developed. Working full time and a single mother, I was only able to take one course per semester, so this was a long process. I guess I was also sort of a guinea pig for the program, because I do not come from a technical or computer-oriented background. My undergraduate degree is in Mass Communications – Radio/TV/Film.
I have been able to apply my studies to my job in many unique ways, by integrating new knowledge with each area of work that I have been involved in. For four years I worked in IT for Williams Communications, in the Internet Development area, so my classes in IP, eCommerce Architecture and the Lab were invaluable. The other two years I was with the company, I worked in Technical Project Management and Product Development. Because of my technical knowledge, I was able to successfully facilitate the integration of business and engineering teamwork for several projects. Working from the business side, I commanded a great deal of respect from the engineering team, because I understood what they were talking about, and could converse on an (almost) equal level.
I am now looking forward to new opportunities, using the masters degree to advance my professional standing.
